Job Title: Technical Writer/Documentation Specialist (School Health Branch)

Job Description:
  • Provide technical writing for program and operational documentation for the School Health Branch
  • Work closely with subject matter experts to write and review scientific and public health reports, fact sheets, web content, and other materials about nutrition, physical activity, physical education, obesity, asthma, food allergies, and other school health topics
  • Support the branch by researching, writing, marketing, and disseminating web content, social media content, technical assistance documents, email announcements, press releases, talking points, and other written materials
  • Review written materials and provide ideas and critical thinking regarding content, clarity, and style
  • Review and revise documents to incorporate comments from technical and editorial reviewers
  • Compile stories, program successes, and lessons learned from tribal communities
  • Develop compendium of promising practices based on input from tribal communities and CDC staff
  • Review and proofread final drafts of reports and other publications after editing and design; work with editors, graphic designers, and health communication specialists to assist with production and dissemination
  • Meet with project strategy leads and senior managers to ensure that key messages, project accomplishments, impact, and lessons learned are included in written materials, where appropriate
  • Ensure the use of proper scientific terminology and translate technical information into clear, readable documents to be used by technical and non-technical audiences
  • Serve on internal and external committees to keep abreast of dissemination policies and programs and to enhance knowledge about school health topics
  • Produce technical and scientific presentations (e.g., Power Point) and/or publications about school health branch content or information about the branch’s activities and strategies
  • Participate in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of communication and marketing plans and strategies designed to inform the public and other audiences about public health programs
  • Provide documentation in presentation-ready quality output using word processing or desktop publishing software
Qualifications:
  • 2-4 years of experience providing technical writing for program and operational documentation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, and time management skills
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
